Match your packing skills with your sailing skills.
I’ve always believed that the holiday truly begins with the packing, and when it comes to a sailing adventure in the Ionian, it’s likely to be a six-week affair. On a sailing yacht, you’re exposed to endless possibilities, each requiring its own set of equipment. Whether it’s snorkelling at night amidst bioluminescence or hiking to the abandoned village tucked away on the mountainside of a remote island, the experiences are boundless. However, there’s one thing the Ionian seas don’t offer: the unlimited space of a hotel room.
1. Soft Suitcases Save Space
When setting sail on a yacht, you’ll discover an array of clever cubby holes perfect for stowing away your belongings. Yet, these cosy spaces often present a challenge for accommodating large, rigid suitcases. Opting for a soft bag offers flexibility; it can be rolled up and tucked away, maximising precious cabin space. No need to splurge on a fancy brand; you’ll find affordable and suitable options at stores like Sports Direct.
Before we dive into the nitty-gritty of what to pack, let’s talk about some essential tips for packing specifically for your yacht adventure.
2. Check the Yacht's Inventory List!
First and foremost, take a peek at the inventory list provided by the charter company of your yacht. Since we at Meraki Sailing work with various charter companies, each yacht may come equipped with different amenities and supplies. Save yourself from overpacking by knowing what’s already on board. Trust me, you don’t want to lug around items that are readily available.
3. Take Your Yacht into Account
Consider the size and layout of the yacht you’ve booked, as this will significantly impact your packing strategy. If you’ve reserved a spacious yacht or catamaran with ample cabins and common areas, you’ll likely have more storage space to spread out your belongings. In this case, you can afford to pack a bit more comfortably, bringing along extra items or indulgences.
On the other hand, if you’ve opted for a smaller boat with limited cabin space, every inch of storage becomes precious real estate. With a smaller crew, you’ll need to be more strategic in your packing, prioritising essential items and minimising unnecessary bulk. Consider multi-purpose items and compact versions of gear to maximise storage efficiency without sacrificing comfort.
By tailoring your packing approach to the size and layout of your yacht, you can optimise space utilisation and ensure a comfortable and clutter-free sailing experience.
4. Split the Load!
Communication is key, especially when it comes to packing for a group adventure. Have a chat with your crewmates and designate who will bring certain items. There’s no need for everyone to pack their own toiletries or speakers when one set will do. By splitting the load, you’ll avoid unnecessary duplication and make more space for the essentials.
5. Think Realistic
What will you be getting up to? You know better than anyone where you’ll be spending most of your time. Maybe you’re a lover of all things under the water and if so I’d recommend bringing your own fins and snorkelling gear as they will be more suited to you than the ones that are on the yacht.
